Sandra Van Trease of BJC Healthcare to retire

Sandra Van Trease, whose leadership helped create a 15-hospital system with nearly 28,000 employees in Missouri and Illinois, will step down as group president of BJC Healthcare at the end of July.

Van Trease started her career with BJC in 2004 after serving as president and CEO of insurer Unicare, a WellPoint Health Networks’ subsidiary.

“Consistently focused on population health, Sandra has served as the president of BJC HealthCare’s Accountable Care Organization since it was established in 2012, helping to drive improvements in patient quality and satisfaction, while reducing costs,” the system said in a statement. “She has also led virtual health efforts which have been a critically important care delivery system during this year’s pandemic.”

In 2012, Van Trease also provided strategic leadership to the BJC Collaborative, comprised of BJC HealthCare, Memorial Health System of Springfield, IL., CoxHealth of Springfield, Mo., and Saint Luke’s Health System of Kansas City, Mo. The group included 41 hospitals and spanned a service area that includes a population of 11.2 million people across seven states. In just four years, the collaborative saved $214 million in the areas of clinical asset management, information technology, and supply chain, according to a press release.

BJC President and CEO Richard Liekweg told the St. Louis Business Journal that an annoucement on how the system will handle her replacement is forthcoming.

Van Trease told friends she was looking forward to continuing her corporate and community board service and spending time with her four grandchildren.
